Singer-composer Bappi Lahiri died in a Mumbai hospital, confirmed the doctor. He was 69. The last rites will be performed on Thursday, said a relative. Fondly known as Bappi da, he was as much known for his hit numbers as he was for his fascination for gold. Bappi Lahiri was known as the true blue ‘Disco King’ of Bollywood of the 80s and 90s, especially for his widely popular songs for films such as Namak Halaal, Disco Dancer and Dance Dance.
Bappi’s music journey:
Singer-composer Bappi Lahiri, who popularised disco music in India in the 80s and 90s, has died following multiple health issues. The singer-composer, a familiar figure for many with his trademark gold chains that he wore for luck and his sunglasses. He was known for his songs in several films of the late 70s-80s. These included “Chalte Chalte”, “Disco Dancer”, and “Sharaabi”. His last Bollywood song was “Bhankas” for the 2020 film “Baaghi 3”.
Golden man:
The playback singer and music director appeared in a TV commercial for a soft drink as India’s ‘golden man’. In 2014, he joined BJP and even contested in the general election from the Srerampur Lok Sabha constituency but lost.
Health condition:
Bappi Lahiri was suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and recurrent chest infection. He was hospitalized in CritiCare Hospital, Juhu for 29 days with this. He recovered well and was discharged (for) home on Feb 15. However, after a day at home, his health again deteriorated and he was brought back to CritiCare hospital in a critical state and succumbed to his illness at about 11.45 pm.
The doctor also revealed the cause of death as Obstructive Sleep Apnea. He said, “He died due to OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) shortly before midnight.”
