Patricia, a 17-year-old from a traditional Chennai family, chose to elope and wed her lover, causing her parents to shun her. When she eventually moved in with her husband, though, her marriage took a disastrous turn.

Due to her husband’s drug use, Patricia Narayan’s marriage became abusive and their family became impoverished financially. Patricia, who was just 17 years old at the time, made the decision to take charge of her situation and sell tea and snacks at Marina Beach to support her family.
