Is meditation about emptying the mind?
No. You cannot make the mind blank — it is like telling the tongue not to taste. Meditation is noticing a thought calmly without following it, and turning your attention back to the breath or the mantra.
Four popular types
Mindfulness — attending to the present moment and the breath. Simple, and the beginner's choice. Mantra — repeating ‘Om’ or the name of your chosen deity. TM (Transcendental). Loving-kindness (metta) — extending goodwill outward. Vipassana — seeing sensations exactly as they are.
Starting daily — 5 steps
1. A quiet place, at the same time each day (morning is best). 2. Sit upright — legs crossed, spine vertical. 3. Eyes softly closed. 4. On the breath — in, out. When attention scatters, come quietly back to the breath. 5. Start at 5 minutes, reach 15 in a month, 20 in three.
What the science says
Eight weeks of daily practice — a 23% drop in cortisol, the stress hormone (Harvard Medical, 2014). Blood pressure falls 5–10 mmHg on average. Reduced risk of dementia (UCLA, 2017). Attention and memory up 16% (Wake Forest, 2010).
Roadblocks and answers
‘I have no time’ — give it 10 minutes for a month, then ask again. ‘I can't do it’ — a scattering mind is normal. For the first 6 months, noticing the scattering is the practice. ‘One day made no difference’ — exactly like exercise: keep it up for 21 days and the change appears.
